My Mission & Values

  • De-stigmatize mental illness in the community.

Treatment Approach

As a counseling psychologist, I help you to assess your unique strengths & perceived "weaknesses."  As therapy progresses and these areas become more clearly defined in your day to day life, we will collaborate on ways to highlight your strengths.  At the same time, I will help you learn ways to cope with and to minimize the limitations that stand in the way of your goals.  I believe health and wellness must include a holistic assessment of the emotional, feeling mind; the physical, active body; as well as the sometimes elusive, spiritual soul.

Individuals who might come to me feeling skeptical of, or even scared to be in therapy, have worked with me and found the process to be more beneficial than expected.  Often people begin therapy with me to understand why they keep falling into the same patterns which have them feeling "stuck" in a rut that leaves them feeling chronically anxious, confused and unhappy. These clients are interested in getting to the root of their unresolved issues that crop up time and time again over the long run with little or no changes.

My approach to therapy is largely psychodynamic.  This means the work includes understanding the things that are not in your immediate awareness, like your unconscious or subconscious.  Treatment often includes increasing your insight, self awareness, understanding and eventual solutions for change. To this end I use a combination of existential; humanistic; and interpersonal therapy.  As a result you will learn to identify and express complex and sometimes seemingly opposite, conflicting emotions.  Once we have this awareness we can then begin to figure out paths toward change; like learning more effective communications with others.  In this way you may better navigate the road to more satisfying, close and healthy relationships with others.

I am an Asian-American, female, psychologist with over 20 years of experience in the field of mental health, currently licensed in NY and NJ.  I was born & raised in the US, and then later lived abroad.  As a bi-cultural individual, I highly value opportunities to work with multi-cultural groups and individuals of diverse orientations.  I continue to welcome individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

For my education and training, I obtained two Masters (EdM & MA) degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University in counseling psychology.  I then earned my counseling doctorate (PhD) degree at Fordham University at Lincoln Center, NYC.  I have taught undergraduate and graduate level psychology classes, supervised mental health counselor trainees.  I have provided consultation/assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapy treatment in diverse settings including: inpatient/outpatient medical centers; assisted living/rehab; schools/colleges; military bases and community clinics.

My clients include teens through adults at different stages of life who have seen me for brief, 1 to 3 sessions of consultation and assessment or for longer term ongoing individual, couples/family, group psychotherapy.  University students; educators; attorneys; healthcare providers; caregivers/parents; corporate/financial executives; veterans; active law enforcement/military service members and more, have found it helpful to speak with me in confidence.

I am an out-of-network provider for most NJ insurances, except Aetna. If you have out of network benefits you would like to use, I am willing to provide documentation for insurance & reimbursement purposes.  If necessary, sliding scale fees may be determined after a financial needs assessment.
